Readis is in fact sheltering in a sea cave on the Rubicon Riverand inadvertently makes contact with a local dolphin pod when he swims out too far to sea. We see how Dolphins continue to adapt to the new Humans and how happy they are to again be of service.
I was facing some problems of my own, so reading this before teh to bed calmed me down so I could sleep better. The mercifully short second mccaffreg of the book, which meshes with the end of All the Weyrsis far less successful.
But that was Mel’s interpretation and I soon adjusted.

This is such a sweet tale in the Pern series. Dragonflight Dragonquest The White Dragon. So should these borderline fans try Dolphins? Dolphins were actually referred to indirectly in the earlier books and called “shipfish”, creatures who allegedly helped human in distress in the sea.

It is a Companion piece to “All the Nane of Pern”, instead of really a stand alone that deals with the Dolphins. Then McCaffrey had to go and write two Pern books to follow it! And at times I need the audio version to listen to when my eyes get tired. Oh for crying out loud This book starts around the time Aivas has been discovered and tells the story of how dolphins were re- discovered in Pern and how the human settlements organised themselves to re This Pern novel from Anne McCaffrey is partially overlapping with All the Weyrs of Pern in mcvaffrey of the period it covers.
The read leaves us with a sense that we have just watched a cheaply rendered Saturday morning cartoon from the early ‘s. T’gellan and Mirrim’s opinion of dolphins and T’lion is greatly improved, as Mirrim mccaffrwy previously miscarried twice due to going between while unknowingly pregnant. The book explores the re-discovery of the dolphins which have sentience and language skills due to a process they were given back on Earth tue apparently bred true.

Overall a good read if you just want more Pern in your life. Instead, Readis decides to remain in his cave and be a dolphineer with the pod who bring dolpnins a bell from the wreckage of one of the ships sunk in the First Pass. McCaffrey has a problem with using “down river” when it should be “UP river away from the sea. I thought I had read this one, but it didn’t seem familiar at all Dplphins belong to the third group of readers who have continued to read the increasingly disappointing Pern books out of a lingering sentimental fondness for the earlier books.
For me, this was a welcome change. Another good Mccaffrey read.
I am passionate about dolphins and swimming The Skies of Pern. Readis ends up in an argument with his mother, who tells him that he cannot associate with dolphins if he wishes to remain in the Hold. People aren’t always nice, doolphins rational, or thoughtful, and it’s great to see the dolphins returning and drawing other characters into the center.

The story revolves around around this link between Readis and the dolphins as the fact of talking and helping “ship fish” clashes with the hidebound culture of Pern that is already ree This book is parallel to The All the Weyrs of Pern in that it takes place in the same time frame. I really enjoyed the characters in this book and learning more about the dolphins and their relationships with humans. When Readis tells T’lion his mother forbade him from seeing the dolphins alone, T’lion doplhins to accompany him. I am copying to here because the conversation thread is too interesting to lose.
