This time, he changes sides unwillingly a bewildering amount of times. Flashman seems to be ensnared rather easily every step of the way to Harper’s Ferry, and that doesn’t seem like him at all.

This was fine with me I liked the formula! Peppered with annoying references to lengthy historical endnotes, the author does not fictonalise American history nearly as well as Gore Vidal. Indeed when I first read the book I think I spent quite a lot of time wishing he was writing about my preferred topic, my mood not being improved by the constant references to the great lost beast of the Flashman papers.
The series begins with Flashman, and He is best known for his Flashman series of historical novels, purportedly written by Harry Flashman, a fictional coward and bully originally created by Thomas Hughes in Tom Brown’s School Days. Flashman later forms a high opinion of Stuart, but never held him in higher esteem than now. This is one of those times that we really understand that we are seeing these historical figures through the eyes of George MacDonald Fraser, and that Flashman is merely a filter.
Still entertaining and educational but, I dunno, something seems to be missing from these later books. Only the US wants the raid to fail. It comes as no surprise that a man of his forceful personality should have risen in society in the past near-decade, nor that he still harbours a modicum of resentment towards Flashy.

This installment of the Flashman papers suffers because the history part gets a little overwhelming with Flashman dangling in the midst. Learn how your comment data is processed. Maybe it’s because it’s set in one of my favorite eras and deals with Ante Bellum America, but I feel that this is a more likable Flashy.
Three highly secretive organisations do want the erstwhile Naval Lieutenant but, improbably, these three disparate organisations, with widely different aims and goals, all want the exact same thing from our hero: Flashman did mention three coincidences, although he fails to call the third for what it is.
